Section 21 – Junior and Teen Fair

Competition Details

Convenor- Marnie Graham 519-927-5344; Committee- Lisa Graham.

Work must be entered in the proper age group (as of date of entry) and must be the work of the current year. One entry per competition class. Exhibitors will be required to complete a Junior &/or Teen Fair Entry Form and a tag for each entry. These will be available at the libraries and we’ll try to leave some at each Caledon school so you can obtain and fill them out before fair time. If you are unable to pick up your entries yourself, please make prior arrangements for someone to do so by showing the committee members the Exhibitor’s Number card given out at entry time.

 

Junior Fair High Point Award Sponsored by the Gauvin Family

$15.00 Gift Certificate for a book for the girl and boy age 6-12 obtaining the most points in their classes.

 

  1. Violet Barrett Memorial Junior Baker Award. Open to boy or girl 6-12 years old as of date of entry. Trophy will be presented at opening ceremonies on Saturday. Each of the following items will be presented on a sturdy disposable plate, covered individually with plastic, no paper liner cups and no mixes to be used. All to be displayed attractively on a tray, overall attractiveness to count in evaluation. 3 rhubarb muffins, 1 lemon loaf and 3 oatmeal raisin cookies. Prizes 1st$5.00 + plaque, 2nd$4.00, 3rd$3.00, 4th$2.00, 5th$1.00.

 

AGE 5 AND UNDER

  1. Print your first name on an 8 1/2 by 11 inch page.
  2. My favourite toy.
  3. 6 treasures from a nature walk displayed on a paper plate.
  4. A piggy bank made from a one-liter milk container.
  5. Decorate a ball cap.
  6. 3 healthy real food snacks for your own lunch displayed on a plate and covered with a clear plastic bag.
  7. A creative piece of artwork not listed made by child with no help (can be a twig, macaroni, etc.)
  8. A crayon coloured page from a colouring book

  5. Make a Fair Theme Collage from different pictures.
  6. Decorate 4 cupcakes for a party, attractively displayed on a sturdy disposable plate and covered with plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag.
  7. Any art work, any medium.
  8. Any sewing project.
  9. A hard-boiled egg decorated in an egg holder.
  10. Any article made from duct tape.

  5. Make a sock puppet using the fair theme..
  6. Make a kite.
  7. Construct a farm animal from Lego.

  2. List as many towns and villages in Caledon, penmanship to count.
  3. Three rhubarb cupcakes decorated for an end of school party. Attractively displayed on a sturdy disposable plate covered with plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag.
  4. Make a quilt by gluing any pieces of paper using the fair theme.
  5. Spring Bouquet in a container.
  6. Any art work, any medium.
  7. Any sewing project.
  8. Teddy Bear Special– In memory of Mary Glassford- Dress a Teddy Bear in our Theme. Sponsored by Betty Brander.. Teddy Bear can be store bought, props can be used. Max 24” in any dimension. Judged on creativity only. 1st $10.00. 2nd $8.00, 3rd $5.00, 4th $2.00.

  1. Robin Hood Best Lunchbox Snack Contest– 5 homemade squares or bars. Exhibitor 12 years and under. Recipe and proof of purchase must accompany entry. 1st$15.00. Winner (parents) must sign a declaration form. Winner eligible to the Robin Hood National Best Lunchbox Snack Contest.

 

 

 

 

TEEN FAIR- Ages 13 to 17 (as of date of entry).

  3. Decorate 4 cupcakes for a party, attractively displayed on a sturdy disposable plate and covered with plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag.
  4. Make a kite.
  5. Article of sewing, hand or machine.
  6. Home made computer invitation card using the fair theme.
  7. Fabric painted t-shirt or tank top with the fair theme.
  8. A care basket for a senior.
  9. Write your favourite poem, penmanship to count.

  12. Create a bouquet made out of construction paper or tissue paper.

  14. A bird house, not from a kit.

  16. Teen Baker Award– Sponsored by Chris Richie/Remax In The Hills Inc. Open to students ages 13-17 as of date of entry. Award to be presented on Showmobile on Saturday during Opening Ceremonies. All Items to be displayed on a paper or foil plate and covered individually on a tray. No paper liners and no mixes. Neatness and attractiveness of display to count in overall evaluation. Make each of the following;1 Lemon Mini Loaf, 4 Rhubarb squares, 4 chocolate covered strawberries, 4 chocolate chip cookies. 1st-$5.00 + plaque, 2nd $4.00, 3rd$3.00, 4th$2.00, 5th $1.00.

 

Teen Fair Photo Competition

  7. Essay contest Juniors and Teens– Open to exhibitors under 17 years as of date of entry. Titled “What Agriculture Means to Me”. Min. 200 words, Max. 500. 1st$10.00 plus gift certificate from Book Lore in Orangeville. All other worthy entries receive $5.00. Sponsored by Lisa Graham.

 

Youth Poster Competition Create an Original Hand Drawn Poster Promoting the Caledon Fair.

Prizes: 1st $3.00, 2nd $2.00, 3rd and all others: $1.00

  1. Youth Poster exhibitor up to Grade 4.
  2. Youth Poster exhibitor Grades 5-8.
  3. Youth Poster exhibitor Grades 9-12.

Min 81/2×11 (23x28cm) Max 11×17” (28x44cm) without border. Mounted on cardstock or Bristol Board with 2” (5cm) border. Theme 2020: “Remember When” Include date and location for the 2022 Caledon Fair, June 10, 11 and 12. Print Name and school on the back of the entry tag. 1st prize winner is eligible to compete at the district OAAS meeting in October 2020. Prize money there is 1st$25.00, 2nd$15.00, 3rd$10.00.

 

 

  1. O.A.A.S. Plain Chocolate Chip Cookie Contest-

The Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies offers a competition, open to youth ages up to 15 years, for the best Chocolate Chip Cookies. The winner of our fair then may compete at the District level. Each District winner then bakes their best batch of cookies to compete at Provincial level to become the OAAS Youth Chocolate Chip Cookie champion.

Rules- 8 chocolate chip cookies without nuts made by the exhibitor and displayed on a firm disposable plate in a clear plastic bag with entry tag firmly attached to the outside. Cookies max 3”, min 2”. 1st$3.00, 2nd$2.50, 3rd $2.00,4th-6th$1.00.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

750ml all-purpose flour

5ml baking soda

4ml salt

250ml butter or margarine

250ml brown sugar

250ml white sugar

2 eggs

10ml vanilla

500 ml semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 375degrees F

  1. Put oven racks to upper middle position.
  2. Lightly grease cookie sheet.
  3. In a medium size bowl combine flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well.
  4. In a large bowl combine butter/margarine and sugars, Beat in the eggs and vanilla until creamy.
  5. Add flour mixture to the creamed mixture and beat to mix well.
  6. Stir in chocolate chips.
  7. Drop dough by small spoonful onto prepared cookie sheet leaving 10cm between each cookie.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until golden.
  9. Immediately place cookies onto cooling racks.
  10. When completely cooled, store in an airtight container.
